HONEYBEE RESCUE AND RELOCATION
This is the Fox Farm Honey Bee Sanctuary at Thorn Preserve, 65 acres of protected meadow and riparian zone located at the foot of Overlook Mountain in Woodstock, New York. In 2015, in partnership with the Catskill Interpretive Center and the Woodstock Land Conservancy, Fox Farm Apiary installed a number of hives to house the bees we rescue. The apiary sits against the tree line at the back of the property and is protected by solar electric fence. All fencing, equipment and labor was donated by us to serve both the bees and the community. This apiary attracts the many visitors to Thorn Preserve and provides a focus for the walks and workshops we offer.
How do the honey bees come to live at this lush sanctuary?
Through our intervention - and some help from you!
Through our intervention - and some help from you!
Honey bees will choose to make their home in the hollow of a tree, or a snug cavity in a home or other building. While these places might make good sense for the colony, often they are inconvenient for the homeowner. Some people with bees on their property are content to coexist. Others, for one reason or another, need to have the colony removed, and welcome a service that will relocate it safely.
And that is where we come in.
And that is where we come in.
Honey bee rescue and relocation helps these essential pollinators to survive and thrive!

Upon arrival at the site we determine the location of the hive and formulate a plan to mindfully access the space. We remove all the honeycomb from the cavity and transfer it and the bees, gently and safely, to a prepared hive box. Finally, we bring them to sanctuary in our apiary. Knowledge of the bees and their habits, years of experience in the field and a calm, positive demeanor go a long way.

We truly love what we do! We are grateful for the opportunity to be of service to the bees and to our neighbors, to share our knowledge and to help foster an appreciation for the magical creature we know as the honey bee.
