make a difference
* Plant flowers that provide forage for the bees. Some bee-friendly plants include (but are not limited to) asters, comfrey, bluebell, echinacea, foxglove, hyssop, lavender, rosemary and thyme. Buy non-GMO seeds and plants that have been grown without pesticides so that you do not inadvertently increase the burden on the bees' survival.
* Eliminate your personal use of toxins, particularly pesticides and insecticides in your home, garden and lawn care. Those dandelions you are trying to eradicate from your lawn provide early pollen for the bees, essential nutrition for their young. Good soil that includes plenty of compost will foster the growth of healthy plants without the use of chemical fertilizers.

* Become a beekeeper. We can help you get a great start by furnishing you with equipment and a nucleus colony (bees, a queen and several frames of drawn comb), as well as private instruction to give you the confidence to care for them. Spring 2023 nucs are now up for grabs; reserve yours now by contacting Chris, 845-750-1652 or info@foxfarmapiary.com.
* Be on the lookout for swarms, especially during the months of May and June. A healthy colony of bees will swarm to create another hive, and the ball of bees you may be lucky enough to see is simply a new bee colony resting on its search for a suitable home. At this point, the bees are without a hive and honey to protect, and so are fairly docile and vulnerable. Even when they find space to build a new hive, many do not make it through the winter. Getting them into a sustainable hive will help to insure their survival. If you see a swarm or notice a colony of bees on property or in a building you own, keep calm and call a beekeeper to discuss their safe removal and relocation. Refrain from calling an exterminator or spraying insecticide; while many pest management companies are mindful of the threat to honeybee survival and will refuse to destroy the bees, they are not equipped to catch and relocate them to sanctuary.
We have the knowledge and experience to offer the honeybee colony its best chance for survival. We care deeply for the honeybees and will help you to help them with courtesy and compassion. Contact us for an on-site evaluation and estimate.

* Attend our workshops and events. We cover such topics as honey bee health, beneficial plants and native pollinators. In addition to the workshops that we offer, we are available to speak to your class or group about these important topics. Contact us to schedule an event, visit our Facebook page and the Events page on this site for the latest news on events and workshops offered by Fox Farm Apiary.
* Teach children to respect honeybees and the significant contribution they make to the foods we consume. Honeybees are responsible for the pollination of more than 70 of the top 100 food crops, which supply 90% of the world's nutrition. Without bees, we are without food!
* Host an apiary. We are always looking for space to set up a new apiary. If you are a landowner in the Hudson Valley who might like to host honey bees on your property, contact us. We will be happy to visit your land to evaluate its suitability as a honey bee sanctuary.
* Donate to Fox Farm Apiary. Your contribution will help ensure that we continue the work we are doing for and with the bees and our community, from developing and maintaining the apiaries, providing housing for colonies, giving workshops and planting forage. We thank you and the bees thank you! Click here to make a donation to Fox Farm Apiary.
* Support our retailers, a list of whom you can find on our Retailers page. They help support us by carrying our honey, skincare products and candles for your personal and gift-giving pleasure.
